I-70 Tips — What to Know Before You Drive
- Check road conditions first — Visit cotrip.org before leaving. I-70 through the mountains can close briefly due to weather, accidents, or rockslides in Glenwood Canyon west of Vail.
- Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnel — You'll pass through this tunnel at ~11,013 ft as you cross the Continental Divide. Altitude is noticeable if you're coming from sea level — drink water on the drive.
- Vail Pass (10,666 ft) — A few miles west of the tunnel. Stunning views but steep grades — use lower gears on the descent, especially with a loaded vehicle.
- Friday afternoon traffic — Ski season Fridays (and busy summer weekends) can back up I-70 from Denver all the way into the mountains. Leave before noon or after 7 PM if possible.
- Winter traction laws — Colorado enforces traction laws on I-70 in winter. All-wheel drive or 4WD required, or carry chains. Rental companies can advise.
- Your exit: Exit 167 (Avon) — Do not take the Vail exits. Keep going a few more miles to Exit 167.
